‘“The very act of being able to speak, listen, and think in two languages and of using two languages on a daily basis appears to sharpen people’s abilities to pay close attention to a aspects of tasks relevant to good performance,” [Prof Virginia Gathercole said].
Research carried out already had also shown having two languages helped protect against the decline in...

The Betrayed →
This documentary is about the Armenian genocide, which is denied and/or downplayed by Turkey (the successor to the Ottoman Empire) to this day. They feel the label of “genocide” is unfair and inaccurate, however, an overwhelming majority of evidence shows otherwise (including eyewitness testimony by Armenians who actually lived through these horrific events).
The Armenian Genocide –...

Q: Why don’t you think people should be forced to donate blood and organs to sick children? Isn’t that “pro-life”?
A: I’m anti-abortion, not pro-life. And both of those things would be a violation of personal liberty, which, if you’ve read anything into my position, is precisely why I’m against abortion.

Microbial production of fatty-acid-derived fuels... →
Indeed, you read the title correctly. Researchers at LS9 (biofuels research) have bio-engineered “souped up” e. coli bacteria that produce biodiesel as a byproduct of sugar consumption. I first heard about this in a documentary I recently saw and found the actual results published in Nature.
There’s a small write-up about the project here as well.

Documentary channel suspension
I figured I’d make a note of this, since most of the video documentaries I feature here are from YouTube channels that have been affected by this; many popular YouTube channels featuring science / history documentaries have recently been suspended.

A quick note from the workplace before posting...
So…the internet that we leech from some company in the building has gone out for an extended period once before and it resulted in a huge drop in blog posting for me.
Well, it happened again last week and consistency of posting dropped a bit. Luckily, the awesome guy who runs the restaurant next-door gave me the password for the wireless he apparently has for his customers; BONUS. Having to...

The Rise and Fall of Thinking Machines →
This article from 1995 has some particularly interesting sections - if you find computer science interesting. Thinking Machines Corporation was an early competitor in the field of parallel processing super computers. Famous physicist Richard Feynman also contributed to the work done by Thinking Machines.
In the later 1980s and 1990s, attention turned from vector processors to massive parallel...

The Day the Universe Changed
Incredible documentary series about the history of knowledge, and the profound impact the spread of new ideas had on the way we view the world around us.
Clicking here (or here) should bring you to the entire playlist created by the original uploader.
The descriptions the uploader provides on YouTube should suffice:
“This 1985 series presented by veteran BBC historian and science reporter...
