“NMDA (n-methyl D-Aspartate) receptors (red) and neurofilaments (green) in a slice of normal mouse brain hippocampus. In some forms of Huntington’s disease cells in the vulnerable areas of the brain express more of these receptors. This may make them more susceptible to cell death. Specifically the receptors appear to carry more current and/or be more numerous in cells that have the mutant huntingtin protein leading to programmed cell death mediated through the NMDA receptor.”
